Lower Cockhill is a medieval farmhouse with a two-bay hall. The hall beams have been

dated to 1435, so this is the probable date of construction. At some later date a chimney

was built and an upper floor inserted in the hall.

The painted room is the extension over the front door. It was added in the late fifteenth

century, probably around 1480. The walls are decorated with religious symbols, and it is

likely that the room was once a chapel.
